In the UK, there are several types of fire extinguishers, each designed for specific classes of fires.

Water extinguishers are suitable for Class A fires, which involve common combustibles like wood, paper, and textiles. They work by cooling the fire and reducing its temperature, but they’re not safe for use on electrical or fat-based fires.

Foam extinguishers can tackle Class A and B fires. Class B fires involve flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, and oils. Foam extinguishers form a layer over the burning substance, starving it of oxygen and cooling the fire. They’re not recommended for kitchen fires or electrical fires.

Dry powder extinguishers are often called “multi-purpose” because they’re effective on Class A, B, and C fires. Class C fires are gas fires, including propane and butane. These extinguishers interrupt the chemical reaction of a fire. However, they aren’t ideal for confined spaces due to visibility and respiratory concerns, and they can cause damage to sensitive equipment.

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) extinguishers are specifically designed for electrical fires and can also tackle Class B fires. They work by displacing the oxygen, thus suffocating the fire. They leave no residue but are not effective for Class A fires.

Wet chemical extinguishers are designed for Class F fires, which involve cooking oils and fats. They’re often found in kitchens. These extinguishers cool the fire and react with the oil or fat, creating a soapy substance that seals the surface and prevents re-ignition.
